Sickness absence falls to 1.9%, the lowest on record.

The Office for National Statistics has confirmed that absence is at an all time low. The rate varies according to sector, country area, employment status and lifestyle issues too. The Office for National Statistics has confirmed that absence is at an all time low. The rate varies according to sector, country area, employment status and lifestyle issues too.   • Sickness absence stats for 2016 have just been released and have revealed the following (in summary)
  • The overall rate was 1.9%, 137 million lost days in total, an average of 4.3 days per worker
  • Londoners had fewer sick days at 1.4%, the Welsh were sickest (2.6%), the Scots not far behind at 2.5%.
  • Public sector workers were 58% sicker than private sector workers with 2.9% absence vs 1.7%.
  • Coughs and colds were the commonest reasons (34m days), musculoskeletal issues a close second (31m) and mental health including stress a distant third at 16m days lost.
  • Smokers had a substantially higher tendency to be off sick (2.5% vs 1.6% for non-smokers)
  • Employees were 33% more likely to be off sick than self-employed people.
