Supporting small business
The a2 Milk Company
The a2 Milk Company was founded in Australia in 2000 following a scientific discovery and is now the no. 1 premium milk in Australia. Since then the business has expanded across the globe, with its UK arm being supported by myHRdept since 2014.
When CEO Scott Wotherspoon joined a2 Milk in 2014, securing myHRdept was an obvious and early action.
“I had worked with myHRdept previously when I was CEO for baby food Company Plum Baby and I had enjoyed a great relationship with myHRdept’s MD Bill Larke, with whom I collaborated on a strategic level, while his team supported me in the day to day.”
Initially we worked with Scott and his team (now numbering 20 in the UK) to set up the HR infrastructure, sourcing and implementing HR software and developing high quality employment contracts ready for the growth curve that Scott inevitably would deliver. Importantly we also helped him find and appoint most of his core team starting with the Office Manager and then sourcing sales, marketing and technical staff to support the roll out of the brand in the UK.
“The a2 Milk business has changed out of all proportion now, we’re listed in the major multiples and we’ve helped re-introduce milk into the lives of some of the millions of people in the UK who have an intolerance to the a1 milk gene (the most common in the UK.) myHRdept have been with us throughout – they’re fast, responsive, pragmatic and they understand our business.”
In the years we’ve been supporting Scott we’ve covered a range of transactional and strategic projects, we’ve seen new joiners, some leavers, we’ve looked after maternity leaves and we’ve assisted Scott and a2 milk’s Chairman with hiring many of today’s team. a2 Milk is listed in New Zealand and the global management team sit in Australia, and last year we were happy to spend time with their Australian Global HR Director after which Scott said;
“thanks again for coming over - really appreciate it and I know Rob was impressed that we have your level of understanding and experience available to the business. So am I!”
Our thanks to Scott Wotherspoon for his kind permission to use this case study.
