    According to a recent report, overqualified EU migrants have boosted the growth of companies employing them while bosses continue to grumble about the poor work ethic of Britons. One in five said that they employed EU migrants because they had a “better work ethic” or “motivation” than British people. The report, based on a survey of 1,000 employers, found that those employing EU migrant workers were more likely to report that their business had grown than those that did not.

    Sports Direct, the well known retailer, is facing legal action from 250 workers who were excluded from a multimillion-pound bonus scheme because they were on zero-hours contracts. Lawyers acting for the part-time staff, who have worked at the high street chain between April 2008 and August last year, are preparing to file multiple claims for breach of contract at the high court. The employees were excluded from a bonus scheme that paid out about £160m worth of shares to 2,000 "permanent" workers in 2013. The claims made by the workers could amount to a whopping £4m-plus bill for Sports Direct.

    Labour would make it easier for workers to take their bosses to an employment tribunal, it was announced yesterday by the shadow business secretary. Chuka Umunna said that if a Labour government was elected at the general election next year, it would slash employment tribunal fees, which had prevented low-paid workers from seeking redress in the workplace since they were introduced by the coalition government last year. Tribunal claims have fallen by four-fifths since the new fees were introduced. Claims relating to age discrimination and unfair dismissal as a result of pregnancy are both down by more than a quarter, while claims against breaches of the European working time directive have fallen by more than 90 per cent.

    The National Minimum Wage applies to all employees and workers in the UK and was first introduced in 1999 when the rate was £3.60 per hour for adults and £3 for young workers. The rate is reviewed each October and will increase again from 1st October 2014. From today the new rates are:

    More low-income workers are now putting enough away in savings for their retirement than in 2012 - a vindication of the government’s auto-enrolment plan to defuse the looming pensions crisis. According to research by Scottish Widows, half of workers earning between £10,000 and £30,000 a year are "saving adequately", compared with a third when the scheme was first launched two years ago.
